The north-south central axis of Beijing, often referred to as the “dragon vein” or the “backbone” of dynasties, is the geologic line upon which the Forbidden City and other areas of Yuan (1271-1368), Ming (1368-1644), and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties’ capital cities were built and planned. According to ancient Chinese fortune telling known as the “Feng Shui,” this important geological line is believed to be able to bring prosperity and long-lasting rule for the emperor and the imperial families.
